Paint sits on top and peels. Stain soaks into the surface, so the colour won't flake or peel. Acid stains react with the concrete and give a mottled, natural stone look. Water-based stains give even colour in a wider range of shades.

What's the difference between acid and water-based stains?
Acid stains react with the concrete and give mottled earth tones that differ from slab to slab. Water-based stains come in more colours, including brighter ones, and give more even coverage.
Can any concrete be stained?
Most concrete can, but the result depends on its age, condition and any past treatments. We'll look at your concrete and tell you what to expect when we quote.
Will the stain fade over time?
A good stain soaks deep into the concrete, so it doesn't fade the way a surface coating does. The sealer on top wears and needs redoing every so often, but the colour stays.
Can staining hide cracks or damage?
Staining makes small surface marks less noticeable, but it won't hide big cracks or damage. With some stain styles those add character. Otherwise they may need repairing before we stain.
How long does concrete staining take?
A typical driveway takes 2 to 3 days, including preparation, staining, sealing and curing time between coats. We'll give you a timeline for your job.
Is stained concrete slippery?
The concrete isn't, but the sealer can be when it's wet. On pool decks and busy areas we add a non-slip additive to the sealer, which keeps it safe without spoiling the look.
